Subtitle Study Tool

Subtitle Study Tool is a browser extension for learning a language from films and series. It finds a subtitle for whatever is playing in the tab, draws it over the video, and puts the language being learnt beside the one already known, both on the same clock.

The overlay reads the video element's own position 20 times a second, so seeking, pausing and buffering stay in step without anyone estimating an offset. The only offset left is the one baked into a file timed against another release. The second subtitle measures it against the first, from the gap that keeps recurring between their cue times, and applies it on its own only when the two look like the same film.

Study mode underlines the words that are rare in film dialogue and shows their meanings at the side as the film runs. Rarity is a rank in a frequency list counted over film subtitles, because a word can be common in print and rare in speech. One key keeps a word with the line it was said in, the same moment in the other subtitle, the film and the timestamp, and the deck exports to Anki.

Beside the extension, the repository has a viewer that does the same for a subtitle file without a video, a batch .srt translator, and Whisper transcription for a film nobody has subtitled. An optional local daemon keeps downloaded subtitles on disk and signs in to OpenSubtitles for a larger daily allowance.

It is open source under the MIT license and is loaded unpacked; it is not in a store. The screenshots show an original scene and a sample pair of subtitles written for the repository, not a film.
